At the proper altitudes, nuclear explosions can also interact with the earth’s natural magnetic fields and radiation belts, creating striking auroral effects. The effects of the largest nuclear explosion in space, the US 1.4-megaton Starfish Prime test in July 1962, were seen and felt practically all across the Pacific Ocean. Another notable effect of high-altitude and space bursts is a strong pulse of electromagnetic energy known as the electromagnetic pulse, capable of temporarily or, in some cases, permanently knocking out radio and radar communications, and sometimes local power grids, all of which were seen with the Starfish Prime shot.

What happens when all these effects take place not in the benign and neutral setting of a testing ground but rather in the heart of a major city teeming with human beings?
